The name Arcturus comes from the Greek Ἀρκτοῦρος (Arktouros), meaning “keeper of the bear” or “guardian of the bear”. The name has been used since at least the 8th century BCE.

Here it was referenced in the works of the Greek poet Hesiod, and was officially approved by the International Astronomical Union’s (IAU) on June 30, 2016.

The Inuit people know Arcturus by two names, Uttuqalualuk (“old man”) and Sivulliik (“the first ones”).
