British boy band One Direction have announced a first tour of Australia fresh from their surprise triumph at the BRIT Awards.

The vocal group pulled off a shock at the BRITs beating Adele to the prize for Best British Single with their hit What Makes You Beautiful.

Now hoping to build on a fan base that includes 2.65 million Facebook friends, One Direction are arriving for shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in March.

"We can't wait to come and see everyone in Australia," singer Harry Styles said.

"You guys have been amazing and have supported us since day one, so thank you."

One Direction - comprising Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson - came third on Britain's The X Factor in 2010.

All aged from 18-20, they completed a first-ever sold-out UK tour earlier this month and their debut album Up All Night has made the top ten in 15 countries.

One Direction play the following shows with tickets on sale from March 2.
