A powerful ice storm is set to affect the Midwest and Northeast of the U.S., bringing treacherous conditions, including freezing rain, sleet and potential power outages.

Meteorologists warn that travel disruptions and hazardous road conditions will be widespread from Wednesday into Thursday.

The National Weather Service has issued ice storm warnings and winter weather advisories across multiple states, stretching from the Great Plains through the Ohio Valley and into New England.

The storm is expected to produce ice accumulations of up to a quarter inch in some areas, making roads slick and increasing the risk of fallen trees and downed power lines.

According to AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham, the storm carries the potential for "dangerous amounts of ice accretion into Thursday," which could lead to widespread power outages and tree damage.

Several major cities—including Chicago, Des Moines, Pittsburgh and Boston—are expected to experience dangerous conditions as the storm strengthens.
